Nurturing indoor plants is not a walk in the park. As opposed to the outdoor varieties, plants that are grown indoors require a higher level of attention to ensure they thrive and reach maturity. If you want to know how to take care of indoor plants, here are a few tips that could give you a head start.
Water them accordingly
Water is a necessity for all plants to grow but when it comes to indoor plants, extra care is needed even while watering them. The first question you should always seek to answer is what size are your plant pots. As a general rule, the larger the pot, the less often the plant should be watered. This is because larger pots tend to retain a lot of water as compared to the smaller ones. Another point you should note when watering your plants is the plant species. Certain species such as cactus and the succulent species generally need less watering than the thin-leaved or flowering plants.
Ensure there is proper lighting
Due to the fact that the plants are grown indoors, it is only natural for sunlight to be blocked from reaching them. If you care so much about natural light, then you might want to place your plants near the windows or in a sunroom. You can also have an indoor grow light in case it is not possible for them to get enough natural light. If you choose to go the indoor grow light way, it is important you have a tray underneath the plants for collecting the condensation which often occurs during the night.
Select your pot wisely
The first thing you will consider when selecting a pot is of course its decoration and how it blends the plant with your interior décor. However, that is only beneficial to you. If you want to add more life to the health of the plants, it is important you put the pot on top of a tray and allow about one inch of aquarium gravel in it. This is encouraged as a way of facilitating evaporation of the water that may remain on the surface of the pot when the plant is watered.
Watch out for plant pests and diseases
Plants naturally attract insects and that is mainly due to their leaves or flowers. Whether the presence of the insects appears beneficial such as in the case with pollination, you do not want any insects around your indoor plants, as there is no telling the amount of mechanical damage they can cause to your plants. Most insects are easy to ward off but some may be a little stubborn and may even pose some threats to you as well. In this case, you will require powerful pesticides. In other rare cases, indoor plants may also be attacked by molds and viruses. These plants often require more intensive care than those attacked by pests.
Position your plants in a safe location
If you have kids in the house or rather playful pets, then you might want to give some serious thought to where you locate your plants. Always remember to keep the plants in areas that are free from the reach of children and pets. If at all possible, you can train them to avoid going near the plants, lest they damage them during their plays.
