Decluttering your home (or anyone's home for that matter) is not always the most enjoyable thing to do on a Saturday morning. It is a project that takes grit, tenacity and dedication. We are going to give you four simple tips and tricks to help make your decluttering easier.
- The first trick is to split large tasks into smaller ones. It may seem counter-productive to take one job and turn it into more, but this will help alleviate the stress that comes along with decluttering a home. Smaller tasks can usually be completed quicker, and when you complete a few small tasks, it will feel like you have completed one large one.
- The next step is to have a method to the madness, including a way to distract yourself. Music, movies, audiobooks and/or podcasts are a great way to keep your mind busy while doing such seemingly mind-numbing tasks when decluttering. Really anything that will give your brain some stimulation aside from folding clothes, picking up old items and listening to the kids scream, will make this process more manageable.
- The third tip is to make a pile for items you're going to get rid of. There is no point wasting energy on decluttering if you can't separate from items that are causing the clutter. This may seem like a waste of money due to the fact that all of those items were more than likely paid for with your hard earned money, but this is a key step in keeping your sanity while decluttering.
- The final trick is to figure out what you are going to do with the items you're getting rid of, as well as the items that you are keeping. There are ways that you can make money off of your older and out-dated items that could help recoup some of the money you are losing by getting rid of these things. There are resell shops that will pay for your brand name clothes. There are countless apps on cell phones that clothes, shoes, underwear and other household items can be listed for sale.
Something that may assist with all of these tips and tricks is to ask yourself questions while going through your items. Do you need it? Is it making life easier or harder for you and your family? Have you looked at it or worn in within the six months? Will my son really notice if I throw this away? Life is filled with choices, and decluttering is just another level of choices. You can get rid of half of your wardrobe and items, but if you do not organize what you keep, you'll be at square one. Donating items to a second hand store or a good will are great ways to move your item(s) out of your hands and into those of some who may need them more.
