While cleaning your apartment, it can be easy to overlook some areas that you don't often look at eye level. The areas that we see every day are easy to remember to clean, but there are some hidden areas, and areas that you just don't really think about, that also need to be cleaned. In order to have a clean and allergen-free home, you need to remember to clean the following areas in your home as well.
Baseboards
Baseboards are essentially all throughout your home, yet they are very infrequently looked at, or cleaned. They can become quite dusty, dirty, and scuffed if you don't remember to clean them. You should add your baseboards into your cleaning routine on a once per month basis, or more if you have a lot of foot traffic in your home from kids or pets.
Ceiling Fans And Light Fixtures
Again, another area that you see every day, but aren't at eye level to inspect, ceiling fans and light fixtures can become downright filthy. That's because they are constantly churning up the dirt and dust in the room, and they collect it all on its way back down to the floor. At least quarterly, or four times per year, you should clean both your ceiling fans and the light fixtures in your home.
The best way to clean your ceiling fan blades is with an old pillowcase. If you slip the pillowcase over the fan blade, then slide it off while wiping the blade, it will contain the dirt and dust inside of the pillowcase instead of pushing it all off onto the floor below. Light fixtures can be cleaned in a sink full of soapy water, then reattached.
Curtains And Blinds
Curtains can be washed at regular intervals as long as their care tag says that they are machine washable. If they are not machine washable, you may need to take them outside and brush them off with a hand broom, or run your vacuum with the brush attachment over the curtains to get all of the dust and dirt off of them. Some curtains are dry clean only, and you may need to have them cleaned bi-annually.
Mini blinds can be cleaned with a duster if they are simply dusty, or with a spray cleaner and a clean cloth if they have a build-up of grime on them.
Behind The Toilet
Probably the most overlooked spot in your home is the area behind your toilet. Most people clean their toilet bowl and seat regularly, but they tend to forget about cleaning behind the toilet. Behind the toilet on the wall and floor is a hotbed for germs and microbes to grow and fester. Your bathroom should be deep cleaned every couple of months, and all of the fixtures and shelving in your bathroom should be thoroughly cleaned at that time, including behind the toilet, the sides of the vanity and a deep scrub on the shower tile should be performed, as well.
